Course Description:
Citing Gilbert Simondon's account of how the past is enfolded into the present to form regularities of transformation in technical objects, N. Katherine Hayles, in How We Think: Digital Media and Contemporary Technogenesis, elaborates on the “complex temporalities” of such objects as part of an “object-centered view” of the world. It can be said, however, that, compared with other topics, far less attention has been given to possible new accounts of time and temporality in the emerging field of studies of posthumanity. Based on Hayles’ formulation, this course aims to look into contemporary theory and cultural production for possible resources to supplement the Simodonian approach and further our understanding of modes of temporal being that are coming into light in the context of an intensifying posthuman world.
